This is a one year Level 6 programme and it is delivered at Bristol Zoo. You will be taught by a wide variety of professionals from research, field conservation and captive animal management backgrounds. The course will develop your knowledge of current zoo conservation practices, by embedding you within the industry.

Course summary

The course covers a variety of vital aspects of zoological management, such as campaign management and interpretation design, that are essential for progression into the industry. It also emphasises the role of zoos in conservation and delivers interactive sessions of species specialist groups and taxa specific modules; these help to provide you with extensive knowledge of managing species for conservation. Utilising studbook keepers and Taxon Advisory Group members, you will learn about the procedures and practices that are essential to managing a breeding programme. You will also gain experience of the level of research, specialist knowledge and management that is required for release and reintroduction programmes.

A number of regional and national excursions will make up part of the course and you will be required to contribute to travel and entry costs. An optional international trip will be offered to those that are able to participate.

Assessment will be carried out through a mix of evaluative reports, individual and group research, presentation and campaign elements, along with a research project/dissertation.

Entry requirements

Achievement of 240 CATS via a related Foundation Science Degree, HND or relevant Degree. All students will be expected to have GCSE grade C or above or equivalent in English, Maths and Science.
