The course provides a solid introduction to animal welfare and animal management. Core modules allow participants to learn business management within the industry for those who wish to pursue a career in the animal welfare or animal health sector

What will I study?

The course content will include mandatory units of study covering Business Environment, Animal Husbandry Management, Animal Health and Welfare and Research Project. In addition to the mandatory units, learners will also complete the following units of study:

  • Work Experience
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Plan and Monitor the Health and Welfare of Animals
  • Animal Behaviour

How will I learn?

Sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical lessons and wherever possible underpinning theory will be demonstrated in a practical context.

There will be a variety of assessment methods used such as written assessments, observations, presentations and discussion. Supervision of Level 2/3 learners will also form part of practical assessment and improve employability skills (subject to DBS clearance)

Opportunities:

Opportunities exist for learners to participate in work experience and placements with a wide range of local industry employers. Work experience is a mandatory unit on the programme.

Learners will also have the opportunity to participate in a self-funded overseas study tour to South Africa or similar. Previous students have enjoyed international trips to South Africa, Borneo and Costa Rica.

Entry Requirements:

GCSE Grades in English and maths at C grade or above.

Animal Management Qualification at Level 3 or equivalent A Level study Qualifications equivalent to 140 UCAS Points.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of the HND, students will have an opportunity to do a top-up course to the full BSc.

Employment:

The course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding that will support your career development in the animal industry. These include: work as an educational officer, animal welfare inspector, pet nutritionist, animal laboratory specialist, rehabilitation specialist, behavioural consultant, pet insurance, agriculture, vet services, working in kennels and catteries or becoming self-employed.

Additional costs:

  • At the end of the 2nd academic year students will have the opportunity to participate in an international study tour. Students will be expected to self fund their own trip. For more details on costs, please contact the Course Leader.
