Do you have a passion for food? Can you see yourself as the next Masterchef? Catering at the new SGS Berkeley Green campus could be the next step for you. Whether you have a passion to create gourmet food or like the idea of catering for large events, our courses cover the breadth of the catering industry. We are able to offer a wide range of courses, depending upon your experience, and will help you to gain an apprenticeship or full-time employment. The Southwest has some extraordinary chefs and places to eat and the restaurant sector is more buoyant now than ever.

Qualifications and progression

SGS offer full-time Catering courses at level 1, 2 and 3 with apprenticeships at levels 2 and 3. Much like a busy kitchen environment, you'll start off learning the basics (Commis Chef) and can then quickly progress to running your own section (Sous Chef). Once you have mastered a broad range of skills, including the preparation of specialist foods, working safely, menu planning and much more, you can further explore the role of Head Chef. You will look in more detail at budget planning, running teams, but perhaps most excitingly the planning and preparation of complex dishes, savoury and sweet, hot and cold. The catering industry is perfectly set up to enable students to enter at various levels depending upon their skills; let us help you to start your gastronomic journey!

Industry and employment opportunities

A career in Catering could offer employment opportunities in a wide range of areas including hotels, restaurants, schools, colleges, the NHS and the armed forces. It will also give you the opportunity to work and travel at the same time, exploring new cuisines, cultures and working environments. Following an apprenticeship you may even be lucky enough to become Executive Head Chef or Chef Patron of your own restaurant.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
