Level 3 Engineering Diploma

Full time course

Summary

This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required for students seeking a general engineering qualification. The initial course is a 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering, which can be topped up to an Extended Diploma in Mechanical or Electronic Engineering by completing a second year.

What will I study?

Students will be working in a modern workshop environment and will be learning skills in a range of practical engineering disciplines, such as machining, electrical/electronics and CAD. Theory classes will provide underpinning knowledge in areas such as health and safety, engineering Maths, mechanical principles, materials and drawing. Numeracy, communication and ICT skills will continually be developed. The second year allows students to specialise in either mechanical engineering or electrical/electronic engineering. There is a large project based element during the second year, where students will have the opportunity to specify, design, build and test a project of their choice. Past students have built a remote controlled hovercraft, a quadcoper and an off-road buggy.

Maths & English

A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths. Therefore learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) in these subjects will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside the main study programme.

Employability

In conjunction with obtaining a trade qualification and practical experience, learners will also develop other skills, such as interview techniques and CV preparation, to prepare them for the world of work.

Work experience

All courses include opportunities for learners to experience working in an engineering environment. This gives the learner the opportunity to develop their skills in their chosen trade and will assist with progression choices.

What do i need to join?

You will be required to attend an interview and undertake a skills test. You will also need to take an initial assessment in maths and English to ensure that learners are capable of progressing on the course. You will need five GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) and above, including English at grade 4 and maths at grade 5.

How long is the course?

1 year, with attendance required for 2.5 days a week. This can be extended to a second year upon successful completion of the first year qualification.

How will I learn?

Practical experience will be gained in the workshop through practical activities and assessments. The underpinning theory will be delivered in the classroom and IT suites, where study will be interactive and informative.

How will I know how I am doing?

Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor and you will receive regular feedback and one-to-one reviews with your tutor to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals.

Are there any extra costs?

Material fees will be required on enrolment. Financial support is available in certain circumstances.
