Apprenticeship in Business and Administration

This programme is for young people who wish to work in an office-based, administrative environment, e.g. a private or public sector company or organisation.  The learner will gain skills and knowledge as well as practical work experience required for working in their chosen environment.  Most of the training will happen in the workplace.

What field will I study?

Modules of study are:1) NVQ 2 Business and Administration - to develop skills in the workplaceThe NVQ consists of two mandatory core units:- Carry out responsibilities at work- Work within a business environmentThere are also 3 additional optional units required, which are selected from a range of approximately 30 units.  Examples include:- Manage diary systems- Presentation software- Database software- Manage the payroll function- Design and produce documents- Plan and run projectsThe choice of optional units should reflect the learner's job description. 2) Technical Certificate - relevant to the learner's employment.  This enables the learner to monitor and improve business administration systems, and to support staff undertaking business administration roles.3) Key Skills - to develop essential skills of communication and numeracy; this could also be enhanced with an IT qualification (further cost involved)

What do I need to join?

No experience is necessary, but the learner needs to have a minimum of grade D GCSE in English and Maths, and must be employed in an administrative environment.

How long is the course?

The duration of the course is 12 months, carried out full-time, but it is possible to complete earlier than this.

When will I be in college?

This course is undertaken primarily at the workplace, and the learner will be released for college-based training, on days to be agreed each week.

How will I learn?

The employer provides the learner with a contract of employment, and supports them on the Apprenticeship programme.  The college provides the technical knowledge and skills needed in the learner's job and the support to complete their programme and become qualified.

What can I do afterwards?

The learner can progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship, or to the next level of NVQ.

What are my career opportunities?

The learner has the opportunity to further their career as an administrator within a wide variety of commercial or other environments.

How will I know how I am doing?

The learner will receive support and feedback from a training advisor assigned by the college in order to complete their learning programme.  Assessments will consist of coursework, tests, completion of a portfolio, and assessments in the workplace.
