The Part-time HNC in Business offers the student the perfect blend of flexibility, challenging learning experience, support and progression opportunities. Designed to fit around past and present industry experience, this courses is practical in nature, often work-based or drawing from experience. For younger students who might  be progressing straight from a BTEC or A-Level, the course offer a wide range of case studies and practical workshops to simulate a real business environment. Visiting speakers and visits to local businesses and organization will support the course ethos of ‘learning on the job’.

When will I attend?

Students will attend college on one afternoon per week, on Tuesday between 2 and 9 pm.  In addition to the classroom teaching, students will be expected to participate in online tutorials on Monday evening and in some online activities.  A great deal of the learning on the course will take place in the workplace and at home. The teaching for this course will run over 40 weeks, but students will be entitled to take 121 months to complete their assignments..  There will also be support through virtual learning, with your tutor online, for five further hours per week, delivered flexibly at times to suit the students.  Much use will be made of the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle), so access to the internet is an essential part of the course.  Lecture notes and materials will be available electronically and some modules will require you to use IT skills to help you undertake and present your work.

How is the course assessed?

A number of methods will be used, including tutor-assessed group and individual written and oral assignments together with self-assessment and peer-assessment; essays and project work.  Assessment requirements vary for each module but normally include a written assignment on a topic which might be negotiated with the module leader. Other approaches include short presentations, reflective journals and a portfolio of tasks.

Progression

The BTEC HNC in Business is recognised by professional bodies including the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Chartered Institute of Management and the Chartered Institute of Marketing. The HNC in Business offers the opportunity for progression into managerial roles within both commercial and public sector organisations. Possible career avenues can include marketing, event management,  retail, sales, project management, human resources and sales.

The BTEC HNC also offers the opportunity to progress to and HND or to the second year of a university degree.

The course will run over 40 weeks of the year.  There will also be support through virtual learning, with your tutor online, for three further hours per week.  Much use will be made of the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle), so access to the internet is an essential part of the course.  Lecture notes and materials will be available electronically and some modules will require you to use IT to help you undertake and present your work.Students should be prepared to work for up to 1,000 hours in total including independent study for each year of the course.

Progression

Progression from the HND into the BA Hons Business Studies at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, can take place once the participant has passed all modules of the HND.

Finance

The annual tuition fee for HND Business in 2009-10 is £1,090.00 per annum.
