This course is offered at Level 3 and is designed to meet the new National Standards in post 16 Education and training and provides threshold status to teach in the sector. It is the first step towards professional recognition in becoming a teacher, tutor or trainer in post 16 sector. This unit counts as six credits.

Classroom study will be used to teach the theoretical background , skills and knowledge that underpin teaching.

Discussions and presentations will develop communication skills, together with reflective practice and self evaluation.

You will plan a short teaching session, a microteach, in a chosen subject and deliver this to the group. You will receive formal and informal feedback on this in order to develop your teaching skills.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry qualifications for this unit. Progression to further units and the level 4 qualification requires candidates to have, or be working towards, level 2 Literacy and Mathematics.

When will I attend?

The course is ten weekly sessions of three hours; a further thirty hours of directed independent study is expected in order to meet the criteria for assessment. Overall assessment is based upon a portfolio of work, which is marked against set criteria. There are opportunities to practise teaching strategies within the group; to give presentations on educational theorists, and to share ideas and expertise.

How is the course assessed?

Your tutor will arrange two tutorials during the course; one at week four and another at week 10.  You will receive written feedback on your microteach which will outline your strengths and areas for development. 

Year 1 Modules

The topics covered are:

  1. Understand the role, responsibilities and boundaries of the teacher or trainer.
  2. Understand and demonstrate a range of teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area.
  3. Plan a teaching session for the group (Micro teach) and evaluate the effectiveness of your teaching.
  4. Explain ways to establish ground rules; understand how to communicate effectively and provide good feedback to others.
  5. Identify and use different assessment methods and explain the need for record keeping.
  6. Maintain a Reflective Practice Journal and Individual Learning Plan.

Progression

Options for further development include:

  • Enrolment onto the Certificate in teaching in the lifelong learning sector. ( 20 weeks x 3hours)
  • Enrolment onto the Certificate of Education course.( 35 weeks x 3 hours)
