SGS win two South West Pride of Table Tennis Awards

SGS College’s Table Tennis Academy scooped two top prizes at the South West Pride of Table Tennis England Awards.

Student Sam O’Toole received the SW Young Volunteer Award while Head Table Tennis Coach Nick Davidson was awarded SW Regional Table Tennis Coach of the Year.

The annual Pride of Table Tennis Awards seeks to honor the volunteers, officials, coaches and personalities who are the heartbeat of the sport.

Speaking about his award, full time student Sam, who is studying creative media production and technology alongside his table tennis training said:

“To receive a nomination for the award was great, just a little praise for the work I have done is really nice. To have won the regional award is something special and I am almost lost for words.”

The SW Young Volunteer Award recognises a person under 25 years of age for their dedication, commitment or impact on a club, on a voluntary basis over the past 12 months. This includes those young people involved in coaching.

Full time level 3 coach Nick works with a number of students at SGS developing their table tennis skills together with a number of community events and a table tennis club at the College.

“To have been nominated by so many people is really special, and makes me feel that the effort put in is making a real difference to so many people in the region. I would like to thank all of those who put in nominations as this takes work itself. I feel very humbled to be in such good company of the past winners,” said Nick.

Selection for both awards was carried out by a regional judging panel and the winners received a trophy and certificate in recognition of their achievement, presented by Jos Kelly the SW Regional Chair at the recent training day at SGS College.

Sam and Nick have now been put forward to the national judging panel for a chance to be shortlisted for our National Pride of Table Tennis Awards in March 2019.
