Students impress at successful athletics events at SGS

SGS Sport hosted the AOC Sport SW & WM (South West & West Midlands) Athletics Competition, Wednesday 8th May.

This regional event saw SGS Sport go up against six other colleges, all competing for the coveted Trophy.

SGS Sport had a great turn out, with a team made up of the athletics squad as well as members of the College’s other sports teams including table tennis, american football, rugby and netball.

The team not only secured great results on the track but also in the throwing and jumping events, which are both areas the team has been developing over the past year.

SGS Sport secured first place in 21 of the 24 entered events, winning the competition by a huge margin of 91 points over second placed team Worcester. The final scores were: SGS Sport 237, Worcester 146, Stratford Upon Avon 82, Truro & Penwith 64, Sandwell 50, Cirencester 26, St Brendan's 16.

Head Athletics Coach at SGS, Andrea Garcia-Lock, said:

“The investment in specialist coaching has not only improved our athletes’ performances but also found some hidden talents in new athletes.

“The AOC Sport SW & WM Athletics Competition was a great success. Winning the event was the icing on the cake. We aim to build on this triumph by offering coaching in all event specialisms and also develop provision in competitions with local sixth forms and colleges.

“We’d also love to host a national event at SGS Sport with the support of the AOC.”

“I’d also like to take a moment to mention one of SGS Sport’s athletes, who also assesses the dual pathway BTEC Sport and the Athletics Academy, Jenna Blundell. Jenna competes in Heptathlon and she has recently been selected to represent English Schools in the World Schools Championships in Croatia next week. The team wishes Jenna luck in her two events. Jenna has achieved great success this year gaining many individual medals and assisting the Avon Schools Combined Athletics Team to win Gold.  Jenna also gained selection and competed for GB Juniors earlier this year.”

SGS Sport also hosted the Schools Cup, Thursday 9th May, organised by Dave Turner. 12 schools entered and over 300 athletes competed in 16 different events across both the Junior and Inter Girls & Boys.

Speaking about the event Andrea said:

“This was an extremely well organised event. It was great to see so many school children taking part, having fun and competing to the best of their ability, sometimes taking part in unfamiliar events to gain valuable team points.

“We also saw some very talented athletes coming through, who we hope may join us in the future.

"Despite the awful weather conditions, we had two great days of athletics at SGS Sport, from ages 12-23.

“The visiting teams, the officials, the AOC and Dave Turner were all very impressed by the facilities and preparation of the events. A huge thank you to all the staff at SGS who assisted in making sure the arena, parking and other areas of the college were fully prepared for both days.”
