A hands-on art study trip saw 132 students and fourteen teaching staff from Stroud School of Art travelling to Paris recently to visit museums and landmark sights, and stopping to draw on the way.

The five-day trip included visits to the the Louvre,  Musee O’Orsay, where students viewed Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait, the Pompidou Centre to view remarkable collections of modern, post-modern and contemporary art, and  a vist to L’Orangerie,  where students sat amongst the Water Lily paintings by Monet.

Amanda Lowry, programme area manager at SGS Stroud said: “The museum and gallery visits inspired questions and heated debate as well as more reflective contemplation.

“We did further visual research visiting must-see sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph and Notre Dame. We also visited less-known but utterly compelling sights such as the Catacombs, a warren of underground tunnels beneath the city, now lined with the bones six million skeletons from centuries ago which were exhumed and relocated during the building of Paris - a truly surreal experience! “

“It was a rich and valuable experience for all, and the resulting visual research from the trip is being used by the students to develop their Paris projects further.”
