Free IT training set to boost job prospects

Free IT training courses designed to increase computer skills, improve qualifications and boost job prospects are being launched in January 2012 at Stroud College for people out of work and receiving benefits.

Mel Little, Stroud College's learning centre manager, said: "It's great news that government funding has changed so that we can offer a choice of free short courses - usually of around ten weeks - that can lead to a full qualification at either level one or two. Even better, the courses are incredibly flexible: students can choose when to study - during the daytime or evening - and have the choice of using our fully-equipped learning centres based in Dursely or at Stroud College. And students can enrol at any time during the year."

A range of IT courses are on offer, such as email, powerpoint, word, spreadsheets, using the internet and creating websites. These free courses are open to anyone who is unemployed and receiving either Job Seekers or Employment Support Allowance.

Mel Little added: "When students apply, they will be asked to attend a free introductory session so that we can explain how the centre works, and help them choose the course that best suits their skills and needs.Training is led by our team of experienced tutors and we aim for a successful learning experience every time."

Here's what some of our students say:

"I wouldn't hesitate to do another course - the staff are extremely helpful"

"It was great being able to work at my own pace and get to grips with the software"

"The most valuable aspect of this course was the quality of the learning materials and the support of the staff; the least valuable aspect of this course was that it ended! I can't wait to come back and do another course."

"I've done something I thought I could never do! I think the trainers are brilliant and very helpful."

*  To qualify for free training, you must be unemployed and receiving Job Seekers or Employment Support Allowance
