NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development

This course has replaced the NVQ in Early Years Care and Education (EYCE).   It is undertaken at the learner's workplace, and is designed to prepare them for working at a higher level of responsibility, possibly involving supervision of staff, with children in various areas of their development, play and learning .  It is approximately 15 months long, but it is possible to complete earlier than this.

How will I know how I am doing?

The learner will be assigned an assessor who will help them to build a portfolio of evidence, which can include items such as case studies, witness testimonies, observation in the workplace and oral or written questioning.   The assessor will visit them on a monthly basis to discuss their progress and agree action plans with them.

Is previous experience necessary?

The learner must be employed in a childcare environment, preferably in a position of some responsibility, including supervision of other staff.

How will the course be delivered?

The workplace will provide opportunities for the learner to gather evidence to include in a portfolio.  The course consists of five mandatory core units plus four optional ones chosen from a range of different units.  Learners will be supplied with materials that will enable them to progress in a planned way between assessor visits.

The mandatory units are as follows:- Develop and promote positive relationships- Develop and maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment for children- Promote children's development- Reflect on and develop practice- Protect and promote children's rightsExamples of optional units include:- Plan and implement curriculum frameworks for early education- Maintain and develop a childminding business- Empower families through the development of parenting skills- Support children who have experienced trauma- Recruit, select and keep colleagues

Do I receive a qualification?

On completion of the course the learner will receive an NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development.

What should I bring?

N/A - this course is undertaken at the workplace.

What's next?

The learner can progress to NVQ Level 4 in Children's Care, Learning and Development or onto Higher Education or further on in their chosen career.

How do I enrol?

The assigned assessor will arrange to visit the learner to fill out with them the necessary documents in order to sign them up.  Before commencing the programme, all applicants will take part in a short initial exercise designed to confirm the level of programme appropriate to their needs and whether they need any additional support with specific aspects.  The employer, the assessor and the learner will then agree a training plan.
