The proportion of learners who pass their qualifications is 88.6% and has remained high over the previous 4 academic years.

Many learners, both in College-based and on work-based provision, make very good progress from their starting points, developing their vocational, technical and practical skills well. Learners on academic courses make good progress and all learners speak very positively about the College.

Learners on full time level 3 Vocational programmes progress well; with an achievement rate of 82.5%

Over the last four years, with significantly increased enrolments, a consistently high proportion of learners have gained their qualifications, having made very good progress with their studies.



Everyone in the college works with enthusiasm and commitment and strives to achieve aspirational targets for the college and its learners, who are well prepared for their future careers.



There is a good use of innovative technology to engage and inspire learners in the classroom.



The College makes very good use of Learner Voice, with feedback being used to improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment as well as the learner experience.



The College provides an inclusive environment in which previously under-achieving groups enjoy their learning and achieve high levels of success.



Leadership and management are outstanding; the Governing Body is ambitious and sets a clear direction for the institution which is well executed by the management team.

Sporting Achievements

Commentary

For over 15 years the Bristol Academy of Sport has enabled students to combine their passion for sport with the ability to access high quality academic education at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.

In addition to outstanding academic provision, students enrolled on the Academy also benefit from exceptional sporting facilities, which were graded as Outstanding by OFSTED in 2015.

Learners at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College have many opportunities to make their voices heard to make a positive and confident contribution to the life of the College and the wider community.

An impressive 80% of SGS College HE students agreed with the NSS statement 'overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course'. The 2015 NSS results demonstrate positives across each of the survey's six main areas in measuring satisfaction, including: For Teaching on my Course, SGS College (89%) is 2 percentage points ahead of the Higher Education sector benchmark; for Assessment and Feedback, SGS College (81%) is 7 percentage points ahead of the sector benchmark and 3 percentage marks above the top quartile; for Academic Support, satisfaction has increased by 13 percentage points (83%) in the past year, putting SGS College ahead of the sector average.

Employer Engagement

Commentary

SGS College works closely with the GFirst and the West of England Local Enterprise Partnerships to ensure our provision matches the employer and economic needs across our region.

Our curriculum planning process is linked to the Local Enterprise Partnership Skills plan and the College provides training for employers through bespoke, full cost, adult-skills and apprenticeship programmes. The college places learners with employers through traineeships, apprenticeships and work experience, Suited Booted Recruited (programmes for the unemployed).

SGS College has over 1200 apprentices per year, on 26 frameworks at intermediate, advanced and higher levels. A partnership with the University of Gloucestershire offers progression routes to Degree Level Apprenticeships.

Achievement rates in English and Maths are high. In GCSE English, achievement was 95% and Maths was 91% (at benchmark).

Judgement

Here is a quote from our latest Ofsted report:

"The multi-faith chaplaincy is well established and represents six major world faiths. It is at the heart of the college's good arrangements to advise and protect learners in relation to radicalisation. Learners' behaviour is good and disciplinary processes are based on positive behaviours and restorative justice. The college offers a very supportive learning environment for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities."

The curriculum at the College is inclusive, offering opportunities at all levels and clear progression routes in all curriculum areas (except catering and motor vehicle which are not offered). It meets the needs of learners and the local communities very well.

Here is a quote from our latest Ofsted report:

"Community learning is very good. Learners gain huge confidence and essential performing and exhibiting skills through the diverse and inspirational opportunities the college and community partners provide. These include Halloween performances, art exhibitions in Stroud Museum and the displaying of work in a local hospital. Learners confidently utilise 'smart' technologies to share work electronically through 'blogs' and sharing platforms."

Arrangements for learners to contribute their views and influence developments are extensive and inclusive. The views of learners and employers were used effectively to improve teaching and learning and learners speak positively about the quality of teaching, being treated like adults, taking control of their own learning and the respectful atmosphere fostered at the College.

Learners make a very positive contribution to the College, the local community and are well prepared to achieve economic wellbeing. Students on all full-time programmes develop skills that contribute to their future economic wellbeing by taking part in work experience.

The Work Placement Team supported 448 learners through the work placement process, advising Health & Social Care, Early Years, Health & Beauty, Pathways, In-Gear, IT and A Level.

Sports provision is outstanding; the College is very successful at local, regional and national level and even international success is not uncommon.

Leaders and managers work highly productively with local, regional and national partners. They ensure that skills needs are met and wide curriculum is developed and well-resourced, to the benefit of learners across Gloucestershire and West of England local enterprise partnership areas.

There is a strong sense of belonging and respect among staff, learners, stakeholders and the community, based on the fact that learners enjoy themselves, are successful and speak enthusiastically about the College and the positive impact it has on their lives.

The College is a tolerant and friendly community where all feel safe and success and progress is high.

Health & Wellbeing

Commentary

At South Gloucestershire and Stroud College safeguarding is good, learners feel very safe and the arrangements for safeguarding are very good. Our culture of sporting excellence provides many opportunities and activities for all learners to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The rapport between staff and learners is excellent, building confidence and ensuring learners feel safe.

Equality and Diversity are promoted through the effective management of student behaviour. High levels of respect and dignity are consistently and constantly reinforced in lessons and throughout the College. All learners are aware of their Rights and Responsibilities and a culture of polite and courteous behaviour is fostered. Bullying and discrimination are tackled very effectively both within the classroom and throughout the College; as a result 98% of learners feel safe.

Learners feel safe at the College and a high proportion (90%) would recommend the College to a friend; confirming that the College’s reputation is very good.

The College fulfils its statutory duties for safeguarding and arrangements and practices are very good.

The College is a tolerant and friendly community where all feel safe and success and progress is high.

Higher Education

Commentary

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College has a vibrant and growing community of Higher Education learners studying a diverse range of programmes from Integrated Wildlife Conservation to Musical Theatre.

The University of Gloucestershire has formed a 10 year Alliance with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and Gloucestershire College. The strategy is to focus on addressing cold spots, articulation routes for our existing learners and to develop a broader offer within the region. Sport, The Arts, Wildlife, Media and Performing Arts are areas of particular expertise with outstanding grading from Ofsted and exceptional facilities, two year fast-track degrees will be part of this offer.

In addition the College offers several professional qualification at level 4, 5 and 6. Professional bodies include CIPS, CIPD, ILM and CIM. We have been awarded the CIPS centre of Excellence for the 7th year running and deliver a large MOD procurement contract to 200 + students on levels 4 and above.
